Traversata del Lario, it’s party again!

Great enthusiasm on Sunday 11 July on the occasion of the Traversata del Lario organized by the Pro Loco of Mandello.

The historic open water swimming event, whose first edition dates back to 1932, attracted the attention of many enthusiasts who did not miss the opportunity to applaud the more than 200 participants able to complete the distance of 3000 meters in the waters del Lario. All in the utmost respect of the anti-covid rules and, apart from the masks, it seemed to have gone back two years, when the last edition was held and the athletes had been able to get out of the water surrounded by two wings of the crowd.

After the obligatory stop in 2020, the organizers have re-proposed the event, albeit with some variations. The classic race from Mandello to Onno, over a distance of 1500 meters, did not in fact take place, thus leaving room for the double formula only, with return to Mandello once the Onno shore was reached. Race this staged for the fourth time. To explain the reasons for this choice is the president of the Pro Loco Mandellese, Rinaldo Citterio: «Between the two it was certainly the race that usually saw fewer competitors registered and, in addition to this, did not provide for any movement of the athletes by boat, significantly reducing the contacts between all of them. We have therefore decided to re-propose only the double version, with the desire to return to organizing both as of next year, hoping that the pandemic will be definitively overcome».

Definitely exciting competition and characterized by the new generation of Lecco swimming. In fact, the victory went to Fabio Maggioni, standard bearer of the Effetto Sport team of Barzanò, an athlete born in 2003. For him I made a decisive extension in the last 400 meters, thus managing to break away from the three teammates who had formed a leading group once they reached Onno. For Maggioni a final time of 38 minutes and 29 seconds, 18 seconds behind his teammate Simone Cogliati, second in 38’47 “. On the third step of the podium the winner of the women’s race, namely Angelica Angilletta, very young 2004 registered for Canottieri Lecco, good at completing the test in 38’51 “. If Maggioni can be considered an expert in open water competitions, victorious among other things in the Traversata del Lario two years ago in the 1500 meter race, the young woman from Lecco was on her second ever crossing, first in Mandello.

Among the other prestigious placings we must mention the third male place of Giacomo Cavalli, also of the Sport Effect, with a time of 38’56 “which allows him to win among the Masters. Camilla Viganò (Effetto Sport ), second in 41’36 “and Silvia Preda (Team Lombardia Master Desio), third in 43’13” ensuring the victory among the Masters.
