Sail: covid stops the Riva Trophy but not the Interlaghina Optimist

As a tradition, the autumn period saw the Gulf of Lecco as a protagonist in terms of sailing.

Società Canottieri Lecco and the Circolo Velico Tivano di Valmadrera, unfortunately in this 2020 characterized by the covid, had to give up one of the two major events on the calendar, the 46th edition of the Interlaghi Winter Championship of – “Cianino” Riva Trophy – for cabin cruisers, scheduled for Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November, which could not be staged due to the Dpcm of last October 24 which blocked all regattas at the zonal level on the national territory.

Eyes therefore focused on the Interlaghina Optimist 2020, in all likelihood, given that it is difficult to compete on the Lario in December, the last regatta of this sad year for Optimist class sailors of the XV Zone. Two beautiful days of sailing in the last entire weekend of October, which saw exciting races in each category. Among the Juniors, the most numerous race with 63 starters, the Swiss Valentin Burkhardt, of the Yacht Club Ascona, in the Canton Ticino, won the race, the most regular in the four tests and able to get the better of a single point on his clubmate Nicolo Carrara, winner of two races on Saturday but less brilliant the following day. On the third step of the podium Pietro Cunegatti of the Gravedona Aval.

Among the Cadets 19 competitors and success of Lorenzo Belviso, also of the Aval di Gravedona, who maintained the leadership in the standings also on the second day of racing thanks to the victory in the only race disputed for this category. In second and third place two athletes from the Cernobbio Sailing Club: Marta Giovannone and Tommaso De Bernardi. The Aval di Gravedona also won the Galletto Vallespluga Trophy – one of the “main sponsors” of the event – which went to the team with the best three finishes in the final classification both in the Cadet and Juniores category, with 160 points, leaving the Sailing Club behind Tivano stopped at 203 points and the Naval League of Mandello with 253 points. Special prize also for the youngest athlete in the race, offered by the Ronald McDonald Italy Childhood Foundation, which went to little Giovanni Cassani of the Circolo Vela Bellano, only nine years old.

The regatta was also valid on Sunday as the fifth Zonal Optimist Meeting for the XV Zone for the Cadets (born in the years 2010-2011) and Juniors (years 2005-2009). Therefore, on the basis of Sunday’s results alone, the winner of the Meeting was the good and regular Matteo Cappio of the Circolo Velico Tivano, thanks to the second and third place conquered in the two races held. In second place Pietro Cunegatti, in third Marco Rolle of the Naval League of Mandello del Lario. Prizes up to fifth place and to the first athlete in the standings, respectively Valentin Burkhardt and Anna Chiara Merlo from Aval Gravedona, who finished fifth in the standings.

Winner of the Cadet category was again Lorenzo Belviso, lining up respectively Marta Giovannone, Tommaso De Bernardi and Alexander Massetti. A real shame for the youngest athletes not being able to finish the second race as well as the Juniors due to the wind, which dropped to 2 knots in the late morning, which forced the race judges, chaired by Eugenio Valsecchi in the Race Committee, to cancel the test without being able to play another.
