The Abbey of Piona

Describing the Abbey of Piona it does mean envisage a place surrounded by a magical atmosphere full of peace and stillness.

Standing at the feet of both Mount Legnone and Mount Legnoncino, the Abbey is set at the top of Olgiasca, a small hill which gently points into the lake.

Consecrated in 1138 and built in Lombard Gothic style, the church is an example of the typical Comacina Art. The Cistercian Congregation still owns the complex and lives there. The Abbey is open to the public everyday from 9 a.m. To 12 and from 2:30 p.m. To 6 p.m., always according to the monks’ commitments. They do base their daily life upon prayer, work and handmade production as well. Visit their own shop and buy some delicacies: honey, candies and liquors, including the well-known Gocce Imperiali..all made with officinal herbs.

At the end of the shopping break, just get some rest and have a seat on one of the benches you find right after the kiosc: take a deep breath and completely enjoy this peaceful place overlooking the lake. You’ll definitely be astonished!
