Sagra di San Giovanni

The Festival of San Giovanni is the oldest event on Lake Como for art, tradition, faith and folklore.

Sagra di San Giovanni

It takes place on the magnificent Isola Comacina, the only island on the lake, on the weekend closest to 24 June, the day of the birth of John the Baptist.

The event recalls the great fire on the Comacina island in 1169, when the inhabitants of Como, to take revenge on the Comacini (who had participated with the Milanese in the destruction of Como in 1127), plundered the city. In addition, an ancient legend tells of a procession by boat to the island to ask for the protection of St. John the Baptist against the bad weather that destroyed the crops in June.

During the weekend many events will take place: the procession with costumed figures, the regatta of the Lucie, food and wine evenings and the unmissable fireworks display!
