Regional Park of Montevecchia

Regional Park of Montevecchia – 2350 hectares that stretch between Cernusco Lombardone, Lomagna, Missaglia, Montevecchia, Olgiate Molgora, Osnago, Perego, Rovagnate, Sirtori and Viganò.

Montevecchia and Curone Valley Regional Park

For the Brianza area it is Muntavégia, a small town in eastern Brianza. It is home to the Regional Park of Montevecchia and the Curone Valley, the stream that flows through it. It is a balcony on the Po Valley. On windy days you can see from Cisa to Rosa Mount. Montevecchia was a cradle of the Brianza civilization. Studies conducted in the seventies have made it possible to estimate the presence of ancient settlements, attributable to the Neanderthals of 60 thousand years ago. These are some of the oldest sites in Lombardy.

The pyramids

Some researchers have shown that the three hills of Montevecchia are pyramids. Apparently they look like three hills but satellite observation has revealed something more. The basis, sides and slope of these geological structures are identical, a situation quite impossible in nature. In prehistoric times the ice from the Alps never crossed this valley. Thanks to its conformation that has diverted the course, a green oasis surrounded by the cold of the glaciation has remained. An optimal place where the local populations could take refuge. According to scholars an ancient civilization would have modeled the limestone hills forming the steps that we can see today. This would have been carried out for a religious-astronomical purpose to determine lunar cycles and eclipses. Essential information for the agricultural activities of ancient populations.

Natural environments

On a naturalistic level, the park includes an area known as the petrifying springs. The water courses allow the formation of travertines, thanks also to the presence of waterfalls and mosses. Another environment is that of lean meadows, the pyramids in fact, rich in very interesting floral and animal species, and in the humid woods. In addition to protecting animal and plant species, the park also carries out an important educational activity in schools. The panoramic point is marked on the top of the hill overlooking Montevecchia. Here stands the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Carmelo of Lombard origin. The original building, destroyed in the sixteenth century, has been replaced by a seventeenth-century church which is accessed via a monumental staircase.

Since the 1980s, the Park has been established to protect the nature of this territory. 2.355 hectares spread over ten municipalities. The agricultural activity of the Park allows the spread of local products, such as the famous Montevecchia cheeses.
