Osteria Sali e Tabacchi
The Osteria Sali e Tabacchi, founded in October 1999, was the old village bakery owned by the Lafranconi family. The Osteria is currently run by Gabriele and Giuliana with the help of some of the town’s ladies (historical collaborators) and their daughters Carola and Federica.
The bar of the Osteria is the reference point for the town’s regulars, young and old, and the adjoining room with a fireplace at the back, furnished with old wooden tables and chairs, is used as a restaurant.
Dishes and tradition
The dishes are simple, the protagonist is lake fish prepared in various ways: agoni and lavarello in carpione or green sauce, tagliolini with missoltini, rice with perch, lavarello with butter and sage, as well as char, pike, pigo, tench and burbot according to availability.
In the winter months there is never a lack of polenta, which accompanies the great traditional Lombardy dishes such as braised meat, game, mushrooms from our woods, cassoela and ossobuco.
Traditionally, on Christmas Eve there is always a nice cup of steaming tripe in front of the fireplace.
The most traditional dish of Maggiana is the Polenta Oncia prepared with cheese and butter of a farm of the village served in big pots and followed by the Meascia (a cake made with corn flour, walnuts, figs, apples, pears and many other ingredients of which you can find our recipe in the book of sweets published by Slow Food Editore), or the Paradello.
Cheeses, wines and desserts
Great importance is attached to the selection of cheeses from our valleys and mountain pastures. Caprini and Quartirolo from the Valsassina, Casera and Bitto from the Valgerola, Agretti and Formagello here. Accompanied by jams and chestnut honey produced locally.
Desserts include hazelnut and chocolate cake, honey parfait, Montebianco with dried chestnuts from Valvarrone.
The wine list is extensive and places great emphasis on Lombardy’s production with Montevecchia wines, Franciacorta sparkling wines and Nebbiolo wines from Valtellina.

Behind the Osteria Sali e Tabacchi, “a cotée”, in an old house, Carola has opened her B&B called “Alla torre del Barbarossa”.
