Monastero S.Giacomo

The origin of the monastery of Pontida dates back to the eleventh century, a fundamental era in the history not only of the Church but of all European civilization. It is the era of the great conflict between the Papacy and the Empire, which goes by the name of “struggle for investitures”.

From it the Church, due to the energetic impulse of Pope Gregory VII, will come out purified and renewed, but above all free from the heavy interference of the secular lords, who had mondanized their existence during the two preceding centuries. In turn, the empire, left defeated and downsized by the long struggle, will cease to be that absolute and sacred power that had been up to then; this will allow the development of modern nation-states, the rise of municipal autonomies, especially in northern Italy, and an ever-clearer distinction between the religious sphere and the political sphere.
