TIME: 3,30 H

The Lake Como Greenway, also called Lario Greenway, is a panoramic trail about 10 km long that develops between the towns of Colonno, Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno, Mezzegra, Tremezzo and Griante. The walk, suitable for all seasons, will take you to the discovery of historic villas and lush gardens, archaeological finds, villages that seem not to have been marked by the passage of time and picturesque landscapes. It can be covered entirely in about three and a half hours of walking or it can be divided into several stages. Along the route you will find public parking, bus stops or boats that, in case you get tired of walking, will allow you to move or return to your starting point. The entire route is well signposted with arrows, signs and metal placards on the floor.

The starting point is the village of Colonno, where, to the south of the town, there is the first sign of the Lake Como Greenway. From street Luigi Civetta you continue to the historic centre of the village and then descend to the lake side. Cross an ancient bridge and take a slight climb that goes along the ancient Via (street) Regina. Turning around you have a beautiful view of the village and the lake.

Continue until you reach Sala Comacina, always skirting the lake. Once at the village cemetery, turn left, following the signs and reach the Chapel of San Rocco. Here you can decide whether to continue along the Greenway towards Ossuccio or make a stop by visiting the historic centre of Sala Comacina (taking the staircase that descends from the Chapel of San Rocco).

Continuing in the direction of Ossuccio, you will see on your right, the beautiful Comacina Island, the only island on Lake Como, famous for its history and to preserve important archaeological finds. If you want to visit the island, you can reach it in a short time by ferry boat. Once in the village of Ossuccio, crossing the highway Regina, you will find the beautiful Romanesque Church of San Giacomo and Filippo with its characteristic bell tower. Then go up towards Via (street) Santuario, which leads to the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso. Here you take via (street) Castelli and pass through the centre of the village. In the background, one of the symbols of the town and of the lake, the bell tower of the Church of S. Maria Maddalena. Going on, you pass the back of Villa Leoni, and then go down to the right in the hamlet of Isola. Here, cross the highway and you will find yourself in front of the splendid Villa del Balbiano.

After crossing the bridge over the Perlana stream, you enter the characteristic village of Lenno. You cross it, passing through asphalted roads and cobbled streets and skirting the Dosso di Lavedo. A little further on you arrive at a green area equipped for picnics, where it is possible to deviate and reach after about 1 km the beautiful Villa del Balbianello. Continuing along the Greenway, you arrive at the Lido di Lenno and continue along the lake along the Medieval Tower of Villa, Villa Aureggi, Piazza XI Febbraio and the Baptistery of St. John the Baptist.

From the Lenno Imbarcadero (landing stage), a fairly steep cobbled climb leads to the hamlet of Mezzegra. Here you come out on Via (street) Pola and then turn right. At the next fork, turn left and you will reach the Church of S. Abbondio, which offers one of the most beautiful views of the Greenway. From there you descend, skirting the “Casa dei Presepi” (open all year round) and arriving at Brentano Palace. You reach the centre of Bonzanigo and return to the lake to turn into Via (street) delle Gere.

After crossing a bridge, you reach Tremezzo. From this point, the Greenway will run along the lake and the Regina highway. You will find on the left Villa “La Quiete” and the Church of San Lorenzo. Then you enter the beautiful Teresio Olivelli public park. Here, passing through a bridge and a staircase, you will reach the complex of Villa Meier and you can continue towards the villages of Volesio, Balogno, Viano, Intignano and Rogaro. Once out of the park you can quickly reach the “Imbarcadero” of Tremezzo (landing stage) and the old town with its characteristic arcades full of bars and restaurants. Continuing on, you arrive at the splendid Villa Carlotta, which houses a museum inside and a splendid botanical garden, both of which can be visited.

After the gardens of Villa Carlotta you enter the village of Griante. The last stretch of the Greenway winds towards Menaggio, along the lakeside promenade and passing through the beautiful villas of Griante until you reach a small bar on the beach of the village (open only in summer) and near the bus stop. Here ends the Lake Como Greenway.
